My warmest aloha to all our students, families, and caregivers. Thank you for your understanding and support as we endeavor to keep our school a safe place during this time of worldwide pandemic. Although our Distance Learning Program has been enacted for Quarter Three, I see so much progress and growth in our students. Our staff remains committed to returning to in-person learning as quickly and safely as possible as we do everything we can to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community. Guiding our return-to-school plans are the CDC-recommended indicators, including the number of new cases per 100,000 persons and the percentage of positive tests in the last 14 days in our community, as well as the ability for every eligible person to obtain the vaccine should they so desire. Once these indicators are acceptable, we will return to in-person education and continue our key mitigation strategies, which include increased sanitation and disinfection, social distancing to the extent possible, consistent and correct use of face masks, and diligent personal hygiene practices. Until we are again face-to-face, I am pleased with student participation in our newly added online educational apps. In addition to continuing our work on Seesaw and initiating the Right Start Math curriculum, we have added Khan Academy, Sumdog, and Make It! to our online learning opportunities. My congratulations to all our participants in the local Sumdog competition. I look forward to the results of the national Sumdog contest currently underway. This week, we begin our afternoon individual tutoring blocks for all students. Scheduled times have been provided via e-mail to all parents. Small-Group Fridays also start this week and the first enrichment workshops being offered include: Typing and Coding with Kumu Leah Santos (P4/P5), Kālai Pahu with Kahu Kekai (P2/3) and Papa Mele Online with Kumu Kalani (schoolwide). We will be offering in-person opportunities for our younger grade levels in the coming weeks, and all students are invited to attend online art classes, Papa Pāheona, with nā Kumu Au Hoon every Thursday from 10:15 am to 11:15 am following our morning classes. Here are some exciting announcements... Our 2020-2030 Strategic Plan, Ke Ao Mālamalama, will be published by the end of this quarter. Mahalo to Dr. Kapā Oliveira for her guidance and authorship. Our Unit Plan Guide ʻĀina is available upon request. The Hawaiʻi Association of Independent Schools will be conducting a virtual campus tour to complete our school license and propel us into the accreditation process. Applications for School Year 2021-2022 are now available on our website at www.kekulaopiilani.com. And finally, we continue to recruit for creative, intelligent, and compassionate teachers to be a part of our ever-growing team of educators. As our school continues to experience growth, so do our families. Congratulations to all of our new little additions - to ʻOhana Elaban celebrating Serenity Wailanaʻs first birthday, ʻOhana Waiaʻu also celebrating the first birthday of baby girl Kahālāwai, ʻOhana Shimada and new baby Rell, ʻOhana Fujita (Palafox) and their newest addition Christian-James Hanale, and to our own Kumu Nalu and ʻOhana Robinson with the recent arrival of Noʻeau. We need to print some very small Ke Kula ʻo Piʻilani uniforms for all of our new babies and I look forward to seeing them in school very soon!
I love and miss each and every one of you. I look forward to the coming days where we can all be together again. Be safe and stay healthy. E mālama pono me ke aloha.

The Hawaiian Language thrives! The month of February is celebrated by all as Hawaiian Language Month. From the time of our royal sovereign, Kamehameha III Kauikeaouli, who said, "Mines is a literate nation," until the declaration in 1978 which made ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi one of two official languages of the state, we persevere by the grace of the language of our ancestors. KA PIKO KAIAO | Ka Piko Kaiao, our weekly Hawaiian language/Hawaiian culture enrichment classes for adult family members and friends of our Piʻilani students, continues online until Spring Break. Our goal is to grow the number of Hawaiian language speakers in our community and we welcome all family members, extended family members, family friends, and some of our associated public community to attend. This year, we are able to continue to offer these classes free of charge; however, the textbook Nā Kai ʻEwalu, Volume I costs $35 and can be purchased from our school office, Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Classes are now held only online, times as follows:
Ka Pae Hoʻomaka, Beginning Hawaiian Language, Thursdays, 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm Ka Pae Haʻahaʻa, Intermediate Hawaiian Language, Thursdays, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm Ka Pae Hoʻomaka, Beginning Hawaiian Language, Sundays, 10:00 am - 12:00 noon
Our online resource library is available here: Ka Piko Kaiao Library. Save this link to your favorites or bookmark bar in your web browser to stay up-to-date on resources available. Seesaw online hosts our lessons, activities, projects, and discussion board. Please email Kahu Kekai Robinson at kahu_kekai@kekulaopiilani.com for more information.

E nā ʻohana ʻo Piʻilani, please keep Tekauri Tanaka and his ʻohana in your good thoughts and prayers as they go through this difficult challenge. There is a Go Fund Me Campaign circulating now to help support his medical costs. “On Thursday, January 29th, Tekauri, son of Kalā and Daniel, was diagnosed with a fast growing tumor on the base of his brain. He was immediately transported to Kapiʻolani Hospital in Oʻahu for an 8-hour surgical procedure to remove the tumor. He has since had a full body MRI to detect if the tumor has spread to other parts of his body and we are awaiting the results. He requires speech and motor skills therapy and continued repeat scans and medical care.”
”His father, Daniel, is a Resource Manager with Mauna Kahalawai Watershed Partnership and his mother, Kalā, is a Hōkūleʻa navigator working on her Masterʻs in Education. Tekauri is 5-years old and in kindergarten at Waihe’e Elementary School. They reside in Wailuku, Maui, along with their 9-year old son Kalae’ula and their 2-year old daughter, Kamani.”
”All donations will be used to assist with Tekauri’s medical expenses and other costs associated with his treatment. We are hopeful and optimistic for his continued improvement. Mahalo to all of you that have supported Tekauri with love, prayers, and offers of help. Any donation to this amazing family would be greatly appreciated.”
